NOTA, by and large, is enjoyable, racy and relevant to its time.Read the full review on Film Companion, here: ![]() He is there in almost all frames and along with Nasser and Sathyaraj, the young superstar holds the film together. The film belongs to Vijay Devarakonda who has given a riveting performance. However, it lacks powerful dialogues and there are some loose ends in the script which should have been tied up. But the film does not turn preachy at any time. To a large extent, what Devarakonda and director Shankar want to convey is that you need big money to control and run a political party. In a way, it is a sarcastic dig at what has been going on in Dravidian politics in the last few years. In one scene, Nasser tells his MLAs not to bend too low showing servitude otherwise they will forget his face when his statue has to be built. Every major political incident that happened in Tamil Nadu has been weaved into the script – dynastic politics, hero-worship culture, Chennai floods, how news channels controlled by politicians whitewash their leader and create fake news, godmen manipulating political leaders, and resort politics to keep MLAs safe from poaching. By making Vijay Devarakonda lead the film, the director has made it more convincing and realistic. There is no romance or a leading lady in the film which also does not have any humour and mass action scenes. There have been films of the same pattern, but what makes NOTA different is that the director has not added any unwanted commercial ingredients. Once out of the hospital, Vinodhan wants to get his chair back and plans to bring down his son’s ministry. As Varun becomes strong as an able administrator (in handling the Chennai floods), his dad comes out of the jail but is caught in a bomb blast and gets hospitalised. He is helped by a journalist and commentator Mahendran (Sathyaraj, modelled on the late Cho Ramaswamy), who was once giving political advice to his dad before they had a fallout. But soon as the situation spirals out of control fuelled by an ambitious opposition leader and his daughter, Varun is forced to become a “Rowdy CM”. ![]() The idea is clear that Varun will only be a “dummy CM” till daddy gets bail. He makes Varun, who is not even a party member, as the temporary new CM. He runs his party with an iron hand but is convicted in an illegal assets case and has to go to jail. Varun (Vijay Deverakonda) is a London returned happy go-lucky guy and son of chief minister Vinodhan (Nasser), a former superstar-turned-politician. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() With the MTI ShowKit™ that comes with every Broadway Junior show, there's no way to fail! For each DITA element in your file, a style class is created in Flare as a result. When you import content from DITA files, there is a one-to-one conversion that occurs. However, you can edit style classes that result from imported DITA elements. In this version of Flare, you cannot edit DITA files natively. MadCap Flare 10: Editing DITA Styles ().In addition to Flare’s help topic about editing DITA styles, here are several articles that discuss how Flare deals with DITA. While some writers who require full DITA support might judge this inability to edit DITA files as a weakness, many other writers who choose topic-based authoring might not require DITA support at all. Notice how I didn’t pair “strengths” with “weaknesses”. Fortunately, Flare mitigates this criticism with its ability to generate DITA output with reconverted DITA elements. Meanwhile, one notable criticism is its inability to natively edit DITA files. One of MadCap Flare’s strengths is its ability to natively import Microsoft Word documents, Adobe FrameMaker documents, Adobe RoboHelp projects, and DITA content, among other formats. MadCap Flare 10: Trial Version How does MadCap Flare deal with DITA? Next, here are some sexy screenshots of the MadCap Flare 10 trial version, including the black ribbon menu, Start Page, Dynamic Help, and sample split-screen for the XML Editor and Text Editor. Whether or not this lack translates into an actual inconvenience in my everyday work remains to be seen. Compared to the Flare editor, the Oxygen editor lacks the ability to display alternate views for both formatted XML and plain text simultaneously. While there are many negligible differences between the two editor interfaces, one difference stands out the most for me. So instead, based on my brief exposure to both Oxygen and Flare, I’ll compare their respective XML editors on the same level. Meanwhile, Flare is a single-source publishing package that includes its XML editor. While Oxygen is a powerful XML editor, it’s still only an editor that’s an integral part of a larger single-source publishing package. Here’s my initial reaction from the same previous post.Īctually, comparing Oxygen to Flare is unfair. Since September, one sexy feature that still stands out for me is the simultaneous split-screen views for both the XML Editor and Text Editor. Not only can I rearrange and save the Window Layout of my window panes, but the Dynamic Help content automatically shifts for the selected window pane! After test-driving the free 30-day trial version of MadCap Flare 10 for several days, I’ve found that its user interface is incredibly intelligent. When I say “sexy”, I don’t simply mean its slick black-themed ribbon menu. In my case, from the start, Flare felt “sexy”. And the way a particular form moves you - whether it’s “cool” or “comfortable” or “smart” or “sexy” - or doesn’t move you, is unique to each of us, our preferences, and our circumstances. Just like choosing a new car to buy, it’s not always about its function, but more often about its form. I can’t easily explain my peculiar fondness for MadCap Flare. ![]() Not only did the Flare demo impress me more than the Oxygen demos, but ever since that presentation, I’ve thought about buying Flare for my own personal use.” In a previous post, I wrote: “When I attended my first local STC chapter meeting in September, I was exposed to Madcap Flare for the first time too. Just rub the surface of your stone with a piece of sandpaper or steel wool. You can perform a scratch test to test if your Amethyst is genuine. You can also test for clarity by shining light through your sample to see if there are any imperfections (i.e., bubbles or fractures) that interrupt this passage of light through your stone. If you have a fake Amethyst stone, these lines will not be as distinct and clear as they would be on a real one. These lines form when the heat of the Earth causes differences in color as it rises to the surface. When you look at a natural Amethyst stone, you can see zone lines in the crystal. It’s tough to overlook how said "perfection" comes without a physical presence but with an on/off switch. The meta-casting choice of Johansson, an actress frequently defined by her status as a sex symbol, does a lot of the heavy lifting here in showing how Samantha's status as Theodore's "perfect woman" is established. Her doesn’t quite fit into this category since Samantha is notably without a body, but she is still coded as sexy in other ways. Think of Leeloo in The Fifth Element for a notable example of the trope. There is a well-worn pop culture trope known as " born sexy yesterday," wherein female characters are shown as highly sexual in terms of their physical aesthetic but childlike in their mental capacity and emotions. Samantha is supposed to bypass that possibility because she's something he literally purchased, an item designed for his convenience and one that is intended to evolve to suit his needs over the years and decades. The AI of Her is personalized to suit the needs of its owner, with the system being described as "an intuitive entity that listens to you, understands you, and knows you." After his divorce from his childhood sweetheart Catherine (played by Phoenix's IRL partner Rooney Mara), Theodore craves an authentic personal attachment but is too cowardly to bare his soul to another human being lest he risk being hurt once more. Technology is prioritized here for its emotional reach, but the notion of it replacing human contact is still one that raises eyebrows. The Los Angeles of Theodore's life is gorgeous but painfully white in a way the real city is not. There are compelling arguments in favor of classifying Her as a utopia, but there are an equal amount that refute such a notion. You don't doubt for a second that Theodore feels true and tangible love for Samantha, and despite the obvious tragedy of that, there is something hopeful at its core. Intimacy with the un-human is frequent in sci-fi, both salacious and scary, but seldom is it depicted with such a candid focus on the inherent discovery of this action. Her is often described as "the movie where Joaquin Phoenix f**ks his phone." It's a funny but ultimately reductive read of what is actually a very tender and empathetic movie, although it does get to the heart of the contradictory nature of Theodore and Samantha's relationship. Her - Official Trailer (HD) Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams ![]() Soon their bond grows into one of romance that feels all too human. She's also lushly voiced by Scarlett Johansson. She is curious, charming, and able to adapt and evolve to suit Theodore's needs. Theodore is great at other people's issues, but not his own, and has been delaying signing his divorce papers for quite some time. The quaintly named Theodore Twombly (played by Joaquin Phoenix) is a lonely introvert who works for a business that writes letters for people who are unable to express themselves emotionally. ![]() Her, Spike Jonze's 2013 sci-fi romance, is a remarkably drama-free film compared to others in its genre with similar premises or themes. OK, boomer, we get it, you think we're on our phones too much. On top of that, there is the usual scorn heaped upon the younger generations and their devotion to the future. We're now always online with devices that give us the world at our fingers if we just sign away all our personal data to a nameless corporation that will use it for whatever it pleases. It's not hard to see why the astounding technical advances of the past few decades have left us all a bit on edge. As Danny Lavery famously wrote in a tweet on Black Mirror pitches for The Toast: What if phones but too much? We see many of the same markers of the badness of a future run amok in such stories: evil governments oppressing the people archaic caste systems endless surveillance and, of course, technology gone too far. Even the most glowing utopian futures depicted in pop culture tend to quickly give way to problems or are exposed as secret nightmares to keep an audience's attention hooked. As is obvious from its very definition, you don't see a lot of stories set in hellish futures where people live mundane lives in a state of content bliss. ![]() ![]() The education of the next philosopher-in-residence is a dangerous moment for the Community, for a true education will reveal the artificial character of the political horizon. The Receiver’s official purpose is to be available to give advice to the Committee of Elders in the unlikely event that something unexpected arises. This “Receiver of Memory” is greatly honored but also radically isolated by the tremendous burden that he bears. The central conceit in The Giver is that the memory of the past-the past before the societal transformation to “Sameness”-is possessed by a solitary individual. So too with The Giver, which is not to say that the movie doesn’t have its good points. I don’t know about the first two in that list (not having any plans to see or read them), but the print versions of the last three are superior to the cinematic ones. More specifically, The Giver is a 1993 “young adult” dystopian novel by Lois Lowry, just brought out in a film version so now you can expect to find the story (and its sequels) shelved under the bookseller’s rubric, “Now-a-Major-Motion-Picture Books,” along with The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Lord of the Rings, The Great Gatsby, and Romeo and Juliet. The Giver is not political philosophy, but it’s the next best thing: science fiction. Instead of Carthage-scale eradication, the society in The Giver has found a new mode-seemingly kinder and gentler-by which to neutralize memory, thereby creating a pliant citizenry. In chapter 5 of The Prince, he counseled harsh measures like wiping out the entire population as the only sure mode to exterminate the remembrance of things past. ![]() How persistent is memory, politically speaking?
